Summary

A deeply honest investigation of what it means to be a woman and a commodity from Emily Ratajkowski, the archetypal, multi-hyphenate celebrity of our time。

Emily Ratajkowski is an acclaimed model and actress, an engaged political progressive, a formidable entrepreneur, a global social media phenomenon, and now, a writer。 Rocketing to world fame at age twenty-one, Ratajkowski sparked both praise and furor with the provocative display of her body as an unapologetic statement of feminist empowerment。 The subsequent evolution in her thinking about our culture’s commodification of women is the subject of this book。

My Body is a profoundly personal exploration of feminism, sexuality, and power, of men's treatment of women and women's rationalizations for accepting that treatment。 These essays chronicle moments from Ratajkowski’s life while investigating the culture’s fetishization of girls and female beauty, its obsession with and contempt for women’s sexuality, the perverse dynamics of the fashion and film industries, and the gray area between consent and abuse。

Nuanced, fierce, and incisive, My Body marks the debut of a writer brimming with courage and intelligence。

Terrible liberal take on feminism that lacks any real or helpful analysis。 don’t waste your time with this。

A must read for all women from late teenage on up。 The former fir education and the latter to see if the essays resonate。

I thought this book was very vulnerable。 The amount of hurt and pain she went through in her life and she’s only in her early 30s as I read this。 Men taking advantage and her questioning her self worth in the industry she is in…。honestly amazing。 I do have to say there was a decent amount of pretty privilege I was picking up in parts of this。 Felt quite distasteful, but overall feel like it was a good read。

I absolutely adore this book。 I completely devoured it and read it in 2 days。 I savored every moment reading this brilliant book。A collection of essays, My Body reveals a fascinating, contradictory perspective of feminism: the simultaneous sexual objectification and sexual liberation/empowerment of women occurring in our society today。The author, model @emrata made money and a career off her body, but also felt objectified and limited by it and her position as a sex symbol。 She addresses her chi I absolutely adore this book。 I completely devoured it and read it in 2 days。 I savored every moment reading this brilliant book。A collection of essays, My Body reveals a fascinating, contradictory perspective of feminism: the simultaneous sexual objectification and sexual liberation/empowerment of women occurring in our society today。The author, model @emrata made money and a career off her body, but also felt objectified and limited by it and her position as a sex symbol。 She addresses her childhood and adolescent experiences that contributed to shaping her understanding of what it means to be a woman in this world: the value placed on beauty and sex appeal, and how men’s view of women can define a woman’s worth (to her childhood brain)。 When she was young, her beauty, sex appeal, and desire from men gave her validation of her worth。 Furthermore, no one talked to her about sex, consent, boundaries。 This led to her feeling disconnected from her body for many formative adolescent and adult years, yet she shares the evolution of her relationship with her body over time, and the beautiful role self-love, pregnancy and motherhood played in that self-view。 As a form of denial of the sexualization, objectification and exploitation that was happening to her as a model, she convinced herself she felt safe when she didn’t, convinced herself she had power when she didn’t。 She basically entered a dissociative state with her body through out her modeling career, almost as if she too treated her body as a commodity for her own financial gain and social validation/power。 Money brought her power and freedom, and was her biggest driving force in her modeling career。 She wanted to capitalize on her beauty for her own benefit。 I could relate to this book so much in terms of being a woman in this world。 @emrata so eloquently articulates experiences and feelings so many women have。 This book is like a manifestation of my own thoughts。 It’s like she read my mind and put my thoughts down on pages in a beautiful, accessible way。 I haven’t loved a book this much in a long time。 。。。more

I found this very interesting and intelligent。 I like how Emily write and organizes and explains her thoughts and feeling。 Big slay。 However, I don’t really know what to take away from it。

I had sooooo (!!!) many bad expectations about this one, but for some reason I felt the need to buy this book when I stood in the bookshop one day, and I will never regret。 I've been following Emily on social media for a few years now and she's incredibly beautiful, which is why I thought this book had no real substance, but I was definitely wrong! I expected just what she predicted readers would expect。Honestly, I didn't expect to learn anything from this book, but her calmness and her outlook I had sooooo (!!!) many bad expectations about this one, but for some reason I felt the need to buy this book when I stood in the bookshop one day, and I will never regret。 I've been following Emily on social media for a few years now and she's incredibly beautiful, which is why I thought this book had no real substance, but I was definitely wrong! I am blown away by how good Emily is at writing and expressing herself。 A true talent。 。。。more

I’m going to take some time to let this book marinate in my mind before composing a thorough review。 In the meantime, I can confidently say that this was a phenomenal book。Whether a symptom of internalized misogyny or of my ever-present and unwarranted cynicism, I was not expecting this book to be anything noteworthy。 In my limited experience with memoirs, I’ve found that they usually require either the author to have had an incredibly unique and compelling life or to be an exceptional writer。 M I’m going to take some time to let this book marinate in my mind before composing a thorough review。 In the meantime, I can confidently say that this was a phenomenal book。Whether a symptom of internalized misogyny or of my ever-present and unwarranted cynicism, I was not expecting this book to be anything noteworthy。 In my limited experience with memoirs, I’ve found that they usually require either the author to have had an incredibly unique and compelling life or to be an exceptional writer。 My Body possessed both qualities。 The feeling this book has left me with is similar to that of Margaret Atwood’s Male Fantasies from The Robber Bride。 My Body felt like a heartbreaking long-form personal account of the concept Atwood wrote of—one woman’s struggle to reconcile her desire to be unseen, unconsumed with an indoctrinated compulsive striving hunger to be ever more pleasing to the gaze she searched for solace from。 “Male fantasies, male fantasies, is everything run by male fantasies? Up on a pedestal or down on your knees, it's all a male fantasy: that you're strong enough to take what they dish out, or else too weak to do anything about it。 Even pretending you aren't catering to male fantasies is a male fantasy: pretending you're unseen, pretending you have a life of your own, that you can wash your feet and comb your hair unconscious of the ever-present watcher peering through the keyhole, peering through the keyhole in your own head, if nowhere else。 You are a woman with a man inside watching a woman。 You are your own voyeur。” 。。。more

was honestly not that good!! she got her point across it felt as if she was trying to make up things to complain about。

I was impressed。 I thought the memoir was honest and I think it included fair acknowledgement of Emily’s privilege in talking about the topic of self-image。 By this I mean it had an element of self-awareness that I was surprised to see within her writing

You’re on to something Emily。

Excellent writer and saddened by her traumas in and out of the industry。 But I admit I did a fair bit of eye rolling。

Loved it。

Let me preface this by saying that I believe every woman can relate to Emily's experience in some way。 I was heartbroken when I read reviews claiming they are uninterested in her perspective or invalidate her narrative。 This book represents her voice。 It is her way of healing and empowering herself, so please let her be! I must admit I was initially puzzled by my preconceived notion that she was a superficial person。 In the end, my perspective of her shifted and I ended up admiring her for being Let me preface this by saying that I believe every woman can relate to Emily's experience in some way。 I was heartbroken when I read reviews claiming they are uninterested in her perspective or invalidate her narrative。 This book represents her voice。 It is her way of healing and empowering herself, so please let her be! I actually dnf’ed this book。 It got too pretentious for me。 I picked it up because I loved Selma Blair’s memoir but I do not feel the same about his one

These essays were so well written I could imagine everything she described。 I could relate to so many of her feelings it felt like she wrote down all my thoughts and feelings that I’m still trying to understand。 Def recommend Emrata is amazing!!

4。5。 I’m really impressed with this。 I fully believe someone in the beauty industry/ a sex symbol can be intelligent and be very thoughtful about talking about different ideas。 But that doesn’t necessarily translate to writing。 Writing is a completely different skill set。 I was extremely impressed with her writing ability (at least from what I could tell from the audiobook) and really enjoyed her perspective。 I liked hearing Emrata acknowledge her hypocrisy, her internalized misogyny and coming 4。5。 I’m really impressed with this。 I fully believe someone in the beauty industry/ a sex symbol can be intelligent and be very thoughtful about talking about different ideas。 But that doesn’t necessarily translate to writing。 Writing is a completely different skill set。 I was extremely impressed with her writing ability (at least from what I could tell from the audiobook) and really enjoyed her perspective。 I liked hearing Emrata acknowledge her hypocrisy, her internalized misogyny and coming to terms with her body。 She was really good at exploring how she comes across to men and the male gaze, but I wish she would’ve discussed how she comes across to women as well。 。。。more

While I definitely don’t always agree with Em, her overall message is spot on。 While sometimes I felt that she is obviously an outlier and not fully experiencing norms, she is also not afraid to admit her own faults。 She is extremely intelligent and deeply honest。 “We never really bother to perceive and understand the person we love to look at”

Emily Morter

Was a really easy read。 Quite sad at points but those stories are intertwined into the overarching theme of women’s ownership when using their sexuality and bodies to establish power。

Charis Ardila

It was honest, I think she herself had such dissonance with how she projected her body to the world。 Good ending, felt very much like the circle of life。

This book is fantastic。 Emily rips apart all of these patriarcal norms that all women fall victim to。 All while being completely transparent to how her own thoughts are controlled by these rules even when she knows it’s BS。 Unlearning is a process for many and her brutal honesty during it and so refreshing and left me constantly saying “yuppppp me too”Example: Hating how women are always pit against each other in a competition for males attention/approval。 All the while at the same time hoping t This book is fantastic。 Emily rips apart all of these patriarcal norms that all women fall victim to。 All while being completely transparent to how her own thoughts are controlled by these rules even when she knows it’s BS。 Unlearning is a process for many and her brutal honesty during it and so refreshing and left me constantly saying “yuppppp me too”Example: Hating how women are always pit against each other in a competition for males attention/approval。 All the while at the same time hoping that she is the woman in the lead。 。。。more

Feels like the essays took a second to get what I wanted out of her, but it worked for me。 Some beautiful and interesting moments in here。 She starts the book off saying she is not set on anything and remains nuanced throughout, so that you empathize but see her aware of her flaws at the same time。 Good stuff

It's an amazing book。 Don't think about it。 I have followed Emrata on socials for as long as I van remember。 Reading this book feels like I know and understand her better as a person。This books explains her relationship with her body as a model。 Some of her experiences I could easily relate to and some explained her life。 The book is easy to read and very well-written and in no way would be called boring。 It's an amazing book。 Don't think about it。 I have followed Emrata on socials for as long as I van remember。 Reading this book feels like I know and understand her better as a person。This books explains her relationship with her body as a model。 Some of her experiences I could easily relate to and some explained her life。 The book is easy to read and very well-written and in no way would be called boring。 。。。more

Like, it was fine。 Pretty and rich white models are entitled to write their own memoirs too。 But her reading of the audiobook was fucking monotonous it nearly killed me。
